Vanasse & Associates, Inc. (VAI), under contract to the Town of Westwood, through a $2,500,000 MassWorks Grant, provided construction services for intersection improvements at University Avenue and Canton-Street, associated with the development of the University Station project in Westwood, MA. Intersection improvements included approximately 1,100 feet of widening and full depth roadway reconstruction on University Avenue to accommodate new turning lanes; widening approximately 700 feet on Canton Street to accommodate new turning lanes; installation of a new traffic control signal, drainage infrastructure, sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, landscaping, ornamental street lighting, pavement markings and signing; and pavement milling and overlay. This project included raising the elevation of University Avenue to elevate the roadway surface above the 100 Year Flood Plan. This was accomplished through the construction of over 600 feet of reinforced concrete walls, including an 8’x10’ reinforced concrete culvert extension and significant excavation efforts for flood plain compensation.
VAI, as a representative of the Town of Westwood, provided construction services including preparation of a comprehensive Bid Manual, administered bid procedures, attended the pre-bid and preconstruction meetings, responded to contractor questions and requests for information, reviewed shop drawings, full time on-site observation, coordination with abutting property owners, weekly construction coordination meetings, contractor pay requisition review and certification, coordination of utility relocations and preparation of as-built drawings. VAI also closely coordinated with materials testing contractors to facilitate and ensure quality control and conformance with contract specifications for earth, hot mix asphalt and cement concrete installations.
